April in the mountains of Colorado can go either way—you can get a beautiful spring day, or you can get a foot of snow. Or sometimes, you can even expect both. As we drove up to Estes Park to the Della Terra Mountain Chateau, the sky was overcast, but the snow had begun to fall.
The ladies were all bustling about the Bridal suite, wearing matching flannel shirts and boot socks. Hair and makeup were getting done as champagne was being poured. Down in the Groom’s quarters, the men were watching sports and chatting casually with one another. The staff at Della Terra was pulling the room decor together while the snow plows started clearing the lot.
Leah and Michael met working together at T-Mobile, and over the years, they had faced trials and tribulations, but they weren’t going to let a little bit of snow (or the tail end of a pandemic) stop them from fully enjoying their day. As the families arrived and everyone was ready, we grabbed formal portraits inside as the snow began falling faster and heavier outside.
When we asked what the contingency plan was for the snow, to our surprise they told us, “we’re still doing it outside.” The staff pulled blankets and umbrellas and cleared snow off of the bleachers at the amphitheater as they ushered guests out to the wedding site. Everyone was bundled up except for the bridal party, who boldly marched down the aisle in their dresses and tuxes with nothing to protect them from the 20 degree weather. A gaggle of turkeys foraged in the dirt a few feet away.
As vows were exchanged, the crowd was all smiles, even after the surrounding trees dumped snow on half the bridal party and everyone was soaked. Not even that could dampen the love and joy that was being celebrated that day. It was all smiles, joyful tears and nothing but love in the room.
